Refuse Laborer

Introduction Join our team in this vital role! This is heavy manual work in collecting garbage and refuse. Work involves performing heavy manual work in the collection of garbage, refuse, trash, and recycling on residential routes. Work is performed as a member of a crew under close supervision. Work is typically 40 hours per week, with a 5:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. shift. Candidate must have a CDL at time of application. Typical Duties And Responsibilities - Picks up and carries medium to large-sized containers in front of houses on an established route; picks up trash in other areas as directed. - Dumps container into truck, ensuring that all refuse is deposited in the truck; cleans area around truck and container; returns empty container to its proper place. - Performs related work as required. Knowledge, Experience, Skills & Abilities Any combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills: - Some knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions of the work. - Some knowledge of the operation and minor maintenance of garbage trucks. - Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions. - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and other employees, and to deal with the public in a pleasant, courteous, and tactful manner. - Physical strength sufficient, to lift and carry heavy objects over a long distance under adverse weather conditions. Necessary Special Requirements - Must possess and maintain a valid Connecticut Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at time of application. Persons with a job required CDL are subject to random drug screenings, and must meet all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse requirements.
